University Challenge — Appearances, 1962–1987

Below is a list of the 117 institutions that I have found that appeared on at least one series during the Bamber Gascoigne series between 1962 and 1987. In most cases, my information on the series is incomplete so a gap does not guarantee that an institution didn't actually appear on a given series. Also, unless a team is marked as having made the quarter-finals or later, some of the teams marked as not having progressed beyond the first round may in fact have done so. See the series results tables by clicking on the cell in the table to find out more.

Also, the many teams that I've seen claimed to be on particular series without further details on their appearance are marked with a hyphen (-). Inevitably, some of these will turn out to be incorrect, usually one series out from the correct series, due to faulty memory or inconsistency in reporting the series (eg "I was on the show in 1970", could mean either the 1969-70, or 1970-71, probably the latter).

After the first few series, institutions were invited to appear in rotation, with most universities invited every other year, and Cambridge and Oxford colleges invited every three years or so, meaning that it was rare for a university to be on two years in succession. Exceptions to this were usually because a team had lost a close match, and a complaint about an incorrect question sometimes resulted in that team's being invited back for the next series. Similarly, if a team was still undefeated when the first round ended then they could come back the following series with their previous series' wins carried over.

During this period Aberystwyth's full name was University College Wales, Aberystwyth and on the show was variously called "University College Wales" or "UC Wales, Aberystwyth" or just "Aberystwyth". All are grouped together above as Aberystwyth. Similarly, "Bangor", "Cardiff" and "Swansea" in the table above also cover "University College of North Wales, Bangor", "University College, Cardiff" and "University College, Swansea", by which they were generally named on the show.
